Comprehensive Guide to Types of Tanzania Visa
Types of Tanzania visas are the different categories of visas issued to foreign nationals who wish to enter Tanzania for various purposes. Managed by the Tanzania Immigration Department (official website: https://visa.immigration.go.tz/), these visas regulate entry into both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar. If you are planning to visit Tanzania for tourism, business, studies, or transit, understanding the types of Tanzania visa available is crucial.
Our role as local Tanzania specialists is to assist travelers in obtaining the correct Tanzania visa while also arranging tours across the country’s breathtaking destinations, including Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Zanzibar beaches. Discover a detailed guide to types of Tanzania visa.
Categories of Tanzania Visa
There are six main types of Tanzania visa available for travelers, each catering to specific purposes:
1. Ordinary Visa (Single Entry Visa)
The Ordinary Visa, also known as a Single Entry Visa, is issued to foreign nationals traveling to Tanzania for tourism, leisure, holidays, conferences, family visits, humanitarian activities, or medical treatment. This visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days for a single entry.
It is essential for most travelers visiting Tanzania, except for U.S. citizens who must apply for a multiple entry visa due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and the United States.
2. Business Visa
The business visa is granted to individuals visiting Tanzania for short-term professional engagements. This includes:
Fixing or repairing machines and equipment
Conducting audits or feasibility studies
Short-term training or business negotiations
Any other lawful business-related tasks approved by the authorities
The business visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days and allows only a single entry. If the nature of work requires a stay longer than three months, travelers should apply for a residence permit instead.
3. Multiple Entry Visa
This visa is primarily issued to U.S. nationals who visit Tanzania for tourism, family visits, or conferences. Additionally, it is granted to:
Non-resident directors of Tanzania-registered companies
Individuals involved in bilateral meetings
Spouses of Tanzanian residents
Government consultants and international NGO representatives
The multiple entry visa is valid for up to 12 months, but each visit must not exceed three months at a time.
4. Transit Visa
The transit visa is issued to travelers passing through Tanzania to another country. The maximum validity of this visa is seven days. Travelers applying for a transit visa must provide proof of an onward ticket or a visa for their final destination.
Note: This visa is strictly for transit purposes and cannot be used for tourism or other activities within Tanzania.
5. Gratis Visa
The Gratis Visa is issued to individuals holding diplomatic, service, or official passports traveling on official duties. Dependents of these officials may also be eligible. Additionally, ordinary passport holders may be granted a gratis visa under special circumstances determined by the Immigration Department.
Applicants for a gratis visa must upload an invitation letter from Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the necessary passport documentation.
6. Student Visa
The student visa is issued to foreign nationals entering Tanzania for academic purposes, such as:
Research projects
Internships
Volunteer work
Exchange programs
Long-term academic studies
There are two categories of student visas based on duration:
Short-term (up to 90 days): Costs $50 USD
Long-term (over 90 days): Costs $250 USD
Students attending language courses in Tanzania are typically granted a maximum validity of six months.
