6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Lemosho Route Full Day-By-Day Itinerary

Arrival Day: Pickup from Kilimanjaro Airport to your booked hotel in Moshi is arranged the moment you land. A short briefing follows check-in, covering gear checks and weather updates. Rest, hydrate, and prepare for the days ahead, with our team on hand before setting off toward Lemosho Gate the next morning.

Day 1: Moshi Town to Lemosho/Londorossi Gate to Big Tree Camp – Stretch: 6 km | Hiking time: 3-4 hours | Climatic habitat: Rain Forest. After breakfast, drive from Moshi Town to Lemosho/Londorossi Gate for registration, then continue to the trailhead. Hikers move through dense rain forest alive with birdsong and towering trees. The gentle grade makes this an ideal warm-up day, letting the body adjust while guides point out wildlife signs. Arrival at Big Tree Camp brings a hot meal and comfortable tents.

Day 2: Big Tree Camp to Shira 2 Camp – Stretch: 18 km | Hiking time: 8-10 hours | Climatic habitat: Moorland. Leaving Big Tree Camp, the trail climbs out of the forest into open moorland dotted with lobelias and heather. This is the longest walking day, so steady pacing and hydration matter more than speed. Wide views of the Shira Plateau unfold as the air grows thinner. Shira 2 Camp sits on a broad plain with dramatic sunset views.

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp – Stretch: 10 km | Hiking time: 6-8 hours | Climatic habitat: Semi Desert. The route climbs toward Lava Tower near 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp, following the rule of climb high, sleep low, training the body for thinner air. Semi desert scenery dominates, with rocky outcrops and valley views. Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall, setting the stage for tomorrow’s scramble.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Stretch: 9 km | Hiking time: 8-10 hours | Climatic habitat: Alpine Desert. The day opens with the famous Barranco Wall scramble, a hands-on climb that looks tough but is manageable with guide support. The trail then rolls through alpine desert toward Karanga Camp for a short relax and lunch before the final stretch to Barafu Camp. This high, exposed camp becomes base camp for the summit attempt, so gear checks and early rest come first.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp – Stretch: 5 km ascent / 12 km descent | Hiking time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent | Climatic habitat: Arctic. Summit night begins near midnight, headlamps lighting a slow climb through arctic conditions toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak. Reaching the summit at 5,895 meters delivers pride as sunrise breaks over the plains below. After celebrating, the descent continues down to Mweka Camp, where thicker air brings welcome relief.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi Town – Stretch: 10 km | Hiking time: 3-4 hours | Climatic habitat: Rain Forest. The final descent winds back through rain forest, with softer trails as elevation drops. At Mweka Gate, hikers receive summit certificates before transferring to Moshi Town, where a warm shower and real bed await. This day is short but meaningful, giving climbers time to reflect together.

Departure Day: Moshi Town to Kilimanjaro Airport transfer closes your trip, though many guests extend it with a Tarangire, Ngorongoro, or Serengeti safari, or time on Zanzibar Beach. Contact us and we will arrange it after the hike. Note that transfer fees this day are not included in the price above but can be arranged easily.

Price, Inclusions, and Exclusions in 6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb Lemosho Route

Prices start from USD 1,600 up to USD 1,900 per person from Moshi, for a shared group departure. Contact us to check availability.

Included: park and concession fees; guide, cook, and porters; breakfast, lunch, and dinner with fresh fruits; roundtrip transport from Moshi Town to the mountain gate.

Not included: tipping and gear rental. Tipping the crew recognizes their hard work, so budget generously for guides, cooks, and porters at trek’s end.

Budget-Friendly Group Climbs

Joining scheduled group departures keeps costs down: shared transport, crew, and campsite logistics reduce the per-person price without cutting corners on safety. Contact us to check availability, secure your spot, and reach the summit with expert guides.

What to Pack

Personal gear is not included in the price above; your guide checks equipment on arrival day and missing items can be rented in Moshi Town. Key gear: 25-50 liter day pack, sleeping bag (-15°C), UV sunglasses, hydration bladder, trekking poles and pants, fleece jacket, membrane jacket and pants, hiking boots, thermal underwear, summit day storm/down jacket and pants, gloves, gaiters, fleece hat and balaclava, headlamp with batteries, waterproof poncho, long sleeve shirts, a one-liter flask (2 liters of water daily), hiking and thermal socks, sunscreen SPF 30+, toiletries, and hand warmers.

Trust and Safety

Safety shapes every part of this journey. Guides are certified and trained in first aid, leading daily health checks and carrying emergency oxygen for rapid descent if needed. Acclimatization follows the trusted rule of climb high, sleep low, paired with a deliberately slow pace. Weather shifts quickly, from warm rain forest air to freezing arctic wind near the summit, so layered clothing matters throughout.

Training, Fitness, and the Route Itself

Cardiovascular training, stair climbing, and loaded weekend hikes prepare the legs and lungs for six demanding days, which involve around 19 to 24 hours of walking, often on just 4 to 6 hours of sleep near summit night. Start training at least two months ahead. The Lemosho Route covers roughly 70 to 71 km (43 to 44 miles) across 6 to 8 days, with one of the highest summit success rates thanks to its acclimatization design. The 6-day version starts at Londorossi Gate, crosses the Shira Plateau, and joins the southern circuit, so guides often recommend 7 or 8 days and reserve 6 for hikers with recent high-altitude experience.

6 Days vs 7 Days vs 8 Days

The 6-day option is the quickest and most budget friendly, ideal for fit hikers with limited time. The 7-day version adds an acclimatization day, improving comfort and summit odds. The 8-day itinerary offers the most gradual altitude gain and highest success rate, the top pick for first-time climbers.

Best Months to Climb

The route welcomes climbers year-round: January to March are typically dry and clear, April and May bring wetter conditions, June through August stay cool and dry with busier trails, September and October offer another dry window with fewer crowds, November sees short rains, and December closes the year on favorable conditions again.
